Finish site cleanup fast with efficient rental equipment
With rentals, you can get a lot of work done in a short amount of time.
When it comes to cleaning up a job site after new construction or demolition is complete, there are myriad tools and implements that can make a seemingly impossible task almost easy.
Pressure Washers
Pressure washers have a dual role in the clean-up process. Use them to clean up around a work site and to clean up equipment. Your area A.R.A.-affiliated rental expert can line you up with the right pressure washer for the job.
Most popular rental: Rated at 4 gallons-per-minute at 2,500 psi
Advantages and Tips
- Compared to garden hoses, pressure washers actually conserve water. Gallons-per-minute, not pressure, is the most important figure to remember while considering your options:
- A typical garden hose delivers 8 to 10 gallons per minute
- Most pressure washers operate in the 3-to-5-gallon-per-minute range
- Bigger units can deliver 10 gallons per minute or more and, consequently, clean even better
- When a lot of water is called for, it's best to have an auxiliary water tank brought on-site to deliver the amount needed
- Models are available in hot or cold-water gas or diesel-engine models
- Washers can be trucked or trailered to a site
- Instead of a conventional sandblaster, try a pressure washer with attachments that help keep the dust down. Attachments allow sand or abrasive material to be added to a pressure washer to do blasting.
Skid Steers with Power Brooms
Skid-steer loaders often are used to meet deadlines for completion of cleanup activities. Besides buckets for loading material into trucks, chutes and power buggies, there are several styles of powered brooms available for skid loaders.
Most popular rental: Rotary-bristle angle brooms
Advantages and Tips
- Use the skid-steer/power-broom combination to move debris where it can be easily picked up
- A special combination broom/bucket is great for sweeping and pickup up from walkways and other areas where debris may become a hazard
Chutes
A big part of any site cleanup job involves debris handling. Chutes are often rented to take debris from upper floors of a building to a hopper below.
Most popular rental chute: 30-inch circular
Advantages and Tips
- Chutes are quicker than carrying debris down in a bucket
- Chutes are required by OSHA if the debris in the building is more than 20 feet above ground
- Both circular and rectangular styles are available
- Plastic chutes are more efficient than simply knocking some pieces of plywood together to form a make-shift chute:
- Chute systems can be securely anchored to the wall
- Chutes are modular so they can be reconfigured to suit the needs of the job
- If the job is new construction, contractors simply add sections until it reaches the top floor.
- For demolition, the sections can be removed as the building comes down.
- Inform your A.R.A.-affiliated rental professional about what is going to be tossed into a chute. If it's a lot of rebar and other steel, then a chute with a steel liner should be used.
Container Trucks
Once debris is in a container or hopper, it has to be transported to a landfill, reclamation site or other dump site. Specialty container trucks are finding favor among larger demolition firms, roofers and others because one container is always on-site while another is shuttled to the landfill.
Advantages and Tips
- A shuttle system offers a contractor versatility while cutting costs and maintenance.
- This system allows crews to keep busy because they don't have to wait for a standard dump truck to haul away a full load and return empty.
- The truck is essentially a flatbed, so it can deliver other equipment to the site as well. It can also accommodate different styles of hoppers and bodies.
- Consider package rentals: Some larger rental houses are offering a truck with a hydraulic hook to load/unload dump containers, two containers, and a skid-steer in a package that can be delivered to a site all at one time.
